Can I use pillows for the newborn baby
Mar 02,2024
Many people like to give a newborn baby a small pillow, but this action is a love mistake because the small pillow not only cannot make the baby comfortable, but may also cause accidents! When can I give my baby a pillow? What is the height of the pillow? Let the experts tell us!
Small pillows are not conducive to the normal development of newborns
Experts from Nanjing Maternal and Child Health Hospital remind newborns not to give pillows.
This is because:
1. The spine of a newborn is straight and has not yet formed a physiological curve. When lying flat, its back and back of the head are in the same plane, which will not cause muscle tension and lead to a pillow;
2. Newborns have a large head that is almost equal to their shoulder width, and sleeping flat or on their side is very natural, without the need for a pillow.
3. The neck of a newborn is very short, and the head is raised, which can be very uncomfortable and easily cause head and neck curvature, affecting the newborn's breathing and swallowing, and even leading to accidents.
When will I give my baby a pillow? What is the height of the pillow?
1. If some newborns experience milk spillage or vomiting, they can slightly raise their upper body, or fold 2-3 layers of a face towel about 1-3 centimeters high as a pillow to prevent vomiting.
2. When a baby reaches three or four months old, their cervical spine begins to bend forward, and at this time, a 1cm high pillow can be used for sleeping.
3. At seven or eight months of learning to sit, the baby's thoracic vertebrae begin to bend backwards and their shoulders develop and widen. At this time, the child should sleep on a 3-centimeter high pillow.
A pillow that is too high or too low is not conducive to a baby's sleep and normal physical development.
